Top 3 Deck Joints & Their Purpose

20/09/2022

Timber decks can make any property look more appealing and attractive. If you’re attempting a DIY build or engaging a professional to do it for you, using specific deck joints will determine the ultimate design outcome of your project. In this article, we’ll look at the top 3 deck joints and their purpose in outdoor timber decking structures.

Mitered Butt Joint (Miter Joint)

Miter joints are essentially two pieces of timber (usually cut at a 45 degree angle) that seamlessly butt together to create the perfect border or edge. Miter joints look amazing at the end of a deck build, as it creates an attractive and uniform finish that enhances the overall decking structure. Its main purpose is to strengthen the corners and thus provide that beautiful design feature around the perimeter of the deck.

Picture Framing is something we would highly recommend and is by far a more visually appealing option. You only need a single board border around the edging of the deck, which is then joined together using a miter joint. The end result is a clean, meticulous and perfectly finished design that looks great.

What is the main purpose of using Miter Joints?

  • Cut to very precise angles to ensure both pieces of wood fit together
  • Each miter joint has a specific style & purpose
  • Miter joints hides the end grain of the wood
  • Can be reinforced with splines & nails for extra strength & durability
  • Adds a highly attractive finish to any decking structure

It’s important to be patient and take your time when working with miter joints. If you rush the process, you could end up with less than a satisfactory result. For eg: If the framing below is not at a symmetrical 90-degree angle, your 45-degree cuts won’t align properly and will therefore not look straight.

Pocket-Hole Joint

A pocket hole joint is a type of joinery that bonds two pieces of wood together that doesn’t require the use of glue. A pocket hole is drilled into the timber to create an entry point for the screw, which is then inserted at a 15-degree angle - ensuring the two pieces of wood are held tightly together. Pocket hole joints are great for use in decks because you only need a few pieces of machinery and equipment to get the job done efficiently.

What is the main purpose of using Pocket-Hole Joints?

  • Super easy to use & install
  • Provides a strong hold between two pieces of wood
  • Great for all types of structural work such as decks
  • Less chance of splitting wood when drilling
  • No need to wait for glue to dry – pocket hole joints are permanent

At Prestige Decks and Pergolas, we use the best quality equipment to ensure your deck is finished to the highest standard. Some of the tools we use include clamps, pocket hole jigs and step drill bit for the best outcome.

Tongue and Groove Joint

If you’re interested in a decking that has grooves along a particular edge, tongue and groove joints are the ‘go to’ option for this type of design. The tongue and groove is measured and cut to fit neatly into the groove of the opposite plank. This type of decking is ideal for those looking for a more natural and rustic feel. Composed of thicker material, its designed to create a highly appealing and strong surface that will endure for many years to come.

What is the main purpose of using Tongue and Groove Joints?

  • Great for high traffic areas
  • Can be used to form square joints
  • Durable, strong & long lasting
  • Can be installed without creating damage to edges
  • Helps eliminate sagging & bouncing
